New Holland - Page 6

Settled in 1728 by John Diffenderfer of Heidelberg, Germany, New Holland was originally known by the names New Design and Earltown.  At the time it was settled, New Holland was a haven for those suffering religious persecution in Europe.  The legacy of those early settlers is present today in the large number of churches located in the area.

In 1750, a town plan was drawn based upon a European style of development that is still evident today. The linear design placed settlements along a high ridge, which Route 23 now follows.

New Holland's economy is closely tied to the rich agricultural business that developed during the 1700s.  It is home to Case New Holland, the second largest agricultural machine manufacturer in the world.
